Skia ora %%First Name%%,

It is officially the busiest events weekend of the season. The Audi Quattro Winter Games NZ opening ceremony kicks of at 5:30pm this afternoon in Earnslaw Park in Queenstown (it's free, if your in QT get yourself to it). More than 750 elite athletes from a record number of competing nations are arriving in New Zealand’s Southern Alps to thrill and amaze spectators at the region’s ski fields and millions of TV viewers around the world as organisers make final preparations for the Audi Quattro Winter Games NZ 2013. Check out the complete list of events on the NZ Snow Sports Events Calendar here. As if that wasn't enough, it is the biggest event weekend at TC, Snowfarm and others, read a summary below.

If case you thought that the snow in May was all we were going to get this winter... think again. Snow has been falling on the mountains, on and off this week with more in the forecast. Hutt is forecast to get another 25cms over the next three days, the rest of the Craigieburn Range 15-20cms; Wanaka mountains and the Mackenize 10-15cms. Ruapehu is expecting about 30cms down to 1700m over the next couple of days but with with nor-westerly gales it will be wind affected.

The weather pattern seems to have shifted. If you follow my theory we are following the same pattern as last year only 4 - 6 weeks earlier. Last season heavy snow in June and September, this season snow in May and.., oh look at that it's snowing again and it's August. With more cold fronts coming in from the south west again it's looking good for a cooler revival. Shoot me down if you like... long term forecasting is all crystal ball gazing if you ask me.

The shorter term forecast for the weekend is easier to predict but isn't looking that flash. A low pressure system will move east over the North Island on Saturday extending a tentacle of unsettledness down the east coast of both Islands. At this stage in the North Island your best bet in on Saturday. Also, not too bad conditions in the Southern Lakes. On Sunday in the South Island winds will be lighter with clear conditions in the Southern Lakes.

Internet Poll: If a large event is on do you; A.) Avoid to ski area and go somewhere quieter; B.) Plan your trip as usual, it doesn't matter; C.) Get up there to see the athletes in their lycra strut their stuff. VOTE NOW.
The last poll results: When should we celebrate mid-winter parties? 42% said the first week in August. We will inform the ski areas for next season.

Make sure that you check out the go on the snow. The New Zealand Snow Sports Events Calendar is updated regularly. A Huge weekend and week coming up;

With the Winter Games NZ being an Olympic qualifying event, loads of International headliners are back in New Zealand like Ståle Sandbech, pictured here at The Remarkables.

We headed up to Rainbow Ski Area to get a nice shot of the new Toyota Landcruiser 70 Series Double Cab that they are using for the season - and the crazy instructors decided to make a ramp..... Lucky the cruiser had the grunt to get right amongst it. Posted by rainbow
