Skia ora %%First Name%%,

Another BIG spring storm passes through; areas in the north are still copping it and lift closing winds still prevail as far south as the Two Thumbs Range today. Amazingly winds will ease and conditions will improve from now on, with Sunday looking fine and calm over the entire country. In the south, a tongue of bad will lick the south west corner of the country through Saturday. The good news is that it will mostly affect the west, the winds will be lighter and there will be new snow around. There's a gap in the weather so pack your ski and board gear and hit the road!!

Just a reminder that there is just three more weeks to go in the South Island with most areas closing their doors after the first week of the School Holidays. The exceptions being Mt Hutt (Oct 13th) and Broken River (TBA, late in Oct). Of course the big mountain retains its snow longer with Whakapapa usually staying open until Labour Weekend (26-28th Oct) and Turoa until the end of the first week in November (TBC). A heads up, Mt Ruapehu will be selling their 2014 season passes during October.

p.s. A big shout out to Brandex and Atomic who saved my bacon. Thanks for the loan of the demo skis for my family holiday after my old skis finally gave up the will to carry me any further.

Safety decision Closes Mt Hutt with Guests on Mountain

A combination of drifting snow and poor visibility has lead to Canterbury’s Mt Hutt ski area closing the access road with a total of 316 guests still on the mountain. Mt Hutt ski area manager James McKenzie said while ski area management had been aware of an approaching front and a poor forecast for today (Wednesday September 4) the situation deteriorated "pretty quickly".
