Well, there is still no significant snow falls in the forecast but the ski areas that have snowmaking are pumping it out day and night as conditions remain cold. Mt Ruapehu is looking a little whiter with the top t-bars now open and the Far West looking to open in the next few days at Whakapapa. At Turoa snow conditions on the upper mountain are the "best they have had so far this season" but "trails are still narrow so take care". Manganui has just had new snow (it's still snowing at time of writing) and is open for business again.

Rainbow in the top of the South, and Porters in Canterbury, are in a similar position with the partial opening of their t-bars. Primo snowmaking conditions though have made sure that what is open is fantastic for beginners and intermediate riders... and they are only charging beginner pass rates. Mt Hutt's base is growing and is claiming its "best day since opening" today. Further South is also looking better with Dobson & Roundhill open and, GREAT snow conditions at Ohau who got the best from the last storm. Everything is open in the Southern Lakes, mostly still on-piste only but some perfectly good off-piste at higher altitudes. (Captain's Basin at Cardrona & Saddle Basin at Treble Cone). Keep an eye on the New Zealand Snow Forecasts to see if any more snow is on the way.

Editor's note: Don't put off your skiing because you hear that there is no snow, get up there and see for yourself. I am writing this from up at Treble Cone, there is some really good runs to be had and snowmaking on the lower slopes is making the on-piste riding as good as ever.

It's all about the kids this weekend as the NZ & Aussie school holidays draw to a close. Whether it's the Volcom Peanut Butter and Rail Jam at Cardrona, the Junior Interfield Series at Coronet Peak & Turoa or a school holiday programme event somewhere else, have fun. If you're involved you already know all about these events, if not, check out what's going on at your local ski area on the NZ Snow Sports Events Calendar.
